Year 7 Program
Foster Secondary College has implemented a dedicated Year 7 Program. The program is based on the Department of Education and Training (DET) implementation of the Victorian Curriculum F-10 initiative in Teaching and Learning. Our Year 7 Program promotes student contribution and encourages ownership of learning.
The Year 7 Program seeks to develop strategies for raising achievement and transforming learning to improve student engagement. Providing students with a broad range of learning experiences and a significant focus on having students develop as learners are two of our specific goals.
Semester 1
English students develop skills in responding to a variety of set texts by use of assignments or creative written tasks. Students are encouraged to discuss character development, themes and authors’ techniques, rather than plot line alone. Students are required to complete class work and activities. Students also develop their creative writing through regular Writing Journal sessions, exploring form, purpose, audience and text type. Home study expectations include: reading, completion of written tasks.
Semester 2
Students develop skills to respond to a variety of texts such as written, digital and visual texts. They are required to discuss character and themes in texts in order to develop analysis skills. Individuals are required to hand-write and type written responses.Students work on language conventions in order to improve their writing. They are encouraged to experiment with writing in a range of genres
Semester 1
Topics covered in year 7 maths include: Whole Number, Fractions and Decimals. Problem solving and calculator skills have been developed within these topics. Note that not all skill achievement standards may be covered in one semester.
Semester 2
Topics covered in Year 7 Maths include: Measurement, Geometry, Algebra and Probability. Problem solving and calculator skills have been developed within these topics. Note that not all achievement standards may be covered in one semester.
Semester 1
Science focuses on developing skills and knowledge in Science. Students are introduced to the safety measures and equipment used in a science laboratory. Students complete practical investigations, scientific reports and projects.
Semester 2
Science focuses on developing skills and knowledge in Science. Students examine the characteristics of living organisms, how they are classified using a dichotomous key and investigated several ways of separating mixtures. Students complete a ‘Forces’ Unit and investigated how simple machines are used to make tasks easier. Students complete practical investigations, scientific reports and projects.
Semester 1
Year 7 Humanities covers aspects of Ancient History, from prehistoric times (c. 60,000 BCE) to Ancient Egypt (c. 3,000 – 2150 BCE). Students develop skills in source analysis and extended writing using historical skills and knowledge.
Semester 2
The Humanities curriculum for Semester Two in Year 7 involves students studying the ancient worlds of Rome and Greece. They study the origin and history of these societies involving looking at how people lived in Ancient Greece and Rome A multi-modal assessment assigned for both topics allowing the students to choose different avenues and topics on which to be assessed.
Semester 1
During Physical Education, students participate in a variety of units including; Swimming, Athletics, Pickleball, Fitness Testing, Softball, Netball, Soccer and AFL. Students developed specific skills in all units and applied these skills into game situations.
Semester 2
During Physical Education students participate in a variety of units including; Volleyball, Table Tennis, Gymnastics, Hockey, Cricket and Basketball. Students developed specific skills in all units and applied these skills into game situations.
Semester 1
Year 7 Health explores a number of topics including Cyber safety, Emotional awareness and development, self esteem and self talk, Sexual health and building respectful relationships and Puberty.
Semester 2
During semester 2 students look at the importance of Hygiene and aspects of oral health, nutrition and the importance good nutrition during teenage years , mental health and bullying.
Semester 1
Year 7 Music takes a practical approach to introducing the power of music into the lives of the students. Each student learns how to play an instrument (piano, guitar and/or percussion) and works closely as a whole class to create, practise, rehearse and perform in a large musical ensemble. The aim of this class is to develop technical skills and knowledge that enables each student to share in the joy of music-making, nurturing the idea that music and creativity have the capacity to engage, inspire and enrich.
Semester 1
Students learn strategies to create an illusion of space and three-dimensional form effectively in their art. Students demonstrate they can use observational drawings and research to create art, and to improve skills using different art forms and materials. Students learn a language base to both discuss and write about art of different cultural and historical styles.
Semester 2
Students continue to create art by working with illusions of space and 3D forms. Students are required to demonstrate they can use observational drawings and research; improve skills in using different art forms and both discuss and write about art from different cultural and historical styles.
Semester 2
Students complete assessment tasks using the design process. This includes Investigating, Designing, Producing, Analysing and Evaluating their food products. Students also research the impact of organic practices on food production.
Semester 1
Learning in Digital Technologies focuses on developing skills in computational thinking and problem solving. Students are introduced to a programming language and a common set of workplace software packages to analyse and visualise data. Students learn about networks, cyber security and physical computing components
Semester 2
Students learn about
- different types of networks
- how text, image and sound data are stored and secured
- analysing and evaluating data to create information
- online collaboration including a code of conduct online
- dissecting a problem through the identification of functional requirements and constraints,
Students design user experiences and algorithms incorporating branching and iterations, and develop, test, and modify digital solutions. Students evaluate information systems and their solutions in terms of meeting needs, innovation and sustainability
Semester 1
Students are introduced to the Design Process, as it is used across the Technology Learning area. They use pictorial drawing techniques to visualize design ideas. Students learn how to work safely with a range of tools and equipment in the use of timber. They evaluate projects and reflect on the process, as well as evaluate their individual progress and success.
